Central location with good aspect overlooking Pavillion Gardens. Bathroom - good shower/bath robes

The hotel was great for being so close to the Buxton Opera House and also for running pre-theatre dinners. The restaurant even accommodated us by serving our dessert at 10pm!

Our stay was mared by only being told about a music event being held until 1am that night in the hotel, when we booked in, despite making enquiries over the phone about the date on two occations.

Great, old fashioned hotel. Rooms are very comfortable and the staff are fantastic. Very nice to see 2 residents lounges where you can relax outside of your room. Breakfast was particularly nice, cooked to order. Lots to do in the area, and the hotel is ideally placed within Buston itself.

Excellent location for Buxton Opera House; impressive dinner in the Wine Bar

The location is stunning and very convenient; there was only one vegetarian option for each course at dinner - but they was excellent. There was a live soul/funk band playing in the cellar, so we were invited down there and raised the average age by >30 years. A thoroughly enjoyable break which convinced us to move to Buxton.

My husband and I recently had a one night stay at the old hall hotel. We had seen it before when visiting buxton and found it to be ideally, centrally situated for everything, especially the opera house and gardens. It was a very comfortable place to stay at and the staff were extremely helpful in a low key sort of way. We had a problem with our shower but were immediately offered another (bigger) room or the use of that room's shower which we accepted. We were given a reasonable reduction in our bill for this inconvenience. We had a very nice evening meal in the wine bar and an excellent breakfast. We would certainly stay there again if we were visiting buxton.

The fact that it is the oldest hotel in England, built by the Earl of Shrewsbury for Mary Queen of Scots when she came to Buxton to relieve her rheumatism. This historical association and the comfortable rooms and facilities, plus excellent food. It is also opposite the Pavilion Gardens and in the centre of the beautiful buildings created for Buxton's spa visitors.

It is situated on The Square and if you have a room overlooking the Square, passers by can be disturbing as they seem to stop outside the hotel at all hours for a chat.

Central location. Very helpful staff. Clean and tidy rooms

Room (nos 21) very small with noisy bathroom. Also dark/dingy with small window with zero view.

As recommended by Joanne the receptionist, we went to a comedy stand up show at the Arts Theatre. It was brilliant. It's on the first friday of every month I believe.

Traditional comfort with good level of service. Friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Historical interest and really good situation next to the park/gardens which were lovely.

Breakfast was a little chaotic - both days we were there the breakfast order was not correct. However the service was excellent and the staff helpful and responsive.

the hotel restaurant was nice, staff were helpful and friendly anf the food was delicious

I had spoke to receptions a few days prior to the trip to see if i could upgrade the room. I was told there were no upgrades available and that reception would ensure i got a good room. When we arrived and made our way to the room i was very dissapointed. There were visable cracks in the ceiling, non of the furnature matched, burn stains on the bedding and the room was very small. The room seemed more like that of a budget hotel than what i had expected, i was very disappointed and feel that the £89.00 cost of the room for one night was over priced.

The building and decor. Breakfast was excellent. Like the cosy lounges. Good position in Buxton, very convenient for town centre, theatre, park.

Was a bit disappointed with lunch, usually eat in wine bar which I now prefer.

The position of the hotel is excellent - opposite the Opera House - but parking can be an issue and is expensive.Very good breakfast but dinner was average.

Very comfortable room but a bit dinghy being at the back and the only view was roof tops. Old fashioned generally but comfortable but the entrance to the room from the lift along a very narrow corridor with tiny doors and not much room height was difficult for elderly people and even more difficult with suitcases to manoeuvre! If we return I will insist on a room at the front of the hotel on the first floor.
